Coin Mixer
A service or mechanism that obscures links between transactions; traceability varies with its design and available evidence.
What does it mean?
High-risk category group
A service or mechanism that obscures links between transactions; traceability varies with its design and available evidence.
The 14 categories in the AML4Tracker risk methodology, explained with documented examples. The groups below describe that taxonomy; they are not universal legal classifications or the numerical bands of a live report. Availability depends on the report and data provider.
How is this concept used?
A mixing mechanism can make it harder to link inputs and outputs. Designs differ, and available transaction data or external evidence may still support analysis. Privacy use and proved unlawful activity are different matters.

ChipMixer: charges announced (2023)
In its 15 March 2023 notice, the U.S. DOJ announced a ChipMixer takedown and money laundering charges against alleged operator Minh Quoc Nguyen. These were allegations in a criminal complaint, not a conviction. The notice does not establish that every mixer user's funds were illicit.

Bitcoin Fog: appellate judgment (2026)
On 25 September 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit affirmed Roman Sterlingov's conviction and sentence in the Bitcoin Fog case, which included money laundering. This judgment concerns a specific operator and case; it does not establish criminality by every mixer user.

Connection to a wallet report
Check what mechanism was identified and whether the report shows a direct interaction or an inferred path. Do not describe all mixing transfers as impossible to trace.
A common misconception
Using a mixer alone does not prove money laundering, and a privacy feature does not guarantee complete anonymity.
